How to get a PhD?

A PhD (Doctor of philosophy), the top academic degree a person can attain, represents mastering a particular field of study.

You will need an exceptional academic record

Though this is not compulsory, it will be helpful if you have an excellent academic record at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Prepare your doctoral dissertation

A PhD entitles the person to be addressed as honorific “Doctor.” To reach this pinnacle of academic pursuit, one has to put in years of dedicated work in the chosen field of specialization.

Your doctoral dissertation must be written exceptionally well. The statement of purpose must be clear and concise. You must be thorough with the entire contents of your dissertation and ready to be examined orally by the faculty.

Display initiative; plan and organize your research

The entire PhD program may take you two to six years to complete. You have to allocate time and streamline all activities related to the research. You have to be totally focused and tenacious during the entire duration of the PhD program to complete it successfully. The ideal method of achieving this would be to split the entire program into manageable smaller tasks. You could concentrate on completing one task at a time.

Find the perfect mentor or guide

This is the most critical step in completing your PhD successfully. The right mentor will be able to guide you in the research, in your chosen field. Typically, this research will last for several years. Since you need to have a perfect understanding with your mentor during the entire duration of your research, finding the perfect mentor is extremely important.

Examine if PhD is ideal for you

A PhD is an ideal qualification for careers in research. If your career goals are to become a university professor, a researcher in a laboratory, an independent practitioner, or a consultant, then you can aspire to pursue a PhD.

Obtain adequate research experience in your chosen field

Publish articles in renowned journals to gain recognition. Deliver presentations in professional conferences. This will provide the appropriate exposure you need to gain the adequate research experience in your chosen field.

Post-graduate or masters qualification is not compulsory

You don’t need an honors degree, master’s degree, or post-graduate degree at the time of sending in your application for PhD. You can directly apply to the doctorate program after the completion of your graduation.

Documents you need for applying

When applying for a PhD, you will need all your academic transcripts, resume, statement of purpose, and letters of recommendation. Some universities stipulate you to take a written examination before applying for PhD.

Work well with colleagues

You will face obstacles during the research phase. For instance, lack of access to laboratory, release of new grants, or hostile colleagues. Learn to communicate and work effectively with colleagues in overcoming all these minor hurdles. Learn to adapt well to fresh opportunities and challenges.

Obtain an assistantship during your doctoral program

Obtaining either a teaching or a research assistantship will be helpful in funding your doctoral studies. This assistantship may limit you to doing research connected to grant work initially. However, in the course of time, you can advance to self-directed research.
