Silver jewelry are beautiful and long-lasting. Unfortunately, they tarnish over time. Read on and find out how to best clean your silver trinkets so that they stay beautiful for a long, long time.
Use hot water, detergent powder and a piece of aluminum foil
Line a small container with aluminum foil; pour the hot water and detergent. Combining these materials leads to a chemical process called ion exchange, wherein the aluminum foil and detergent removes the metallic content of the water causing it to “soften”. The softened water is responsible for making your jewelry shine like new.
Let it rest in a vinegar and baking soda solution
Both of these substances are known for their all-around cleaning purposes. Just mix half a cup of vinegar with 2 spoonfuls of baking soda in a bowl, dunk your jewelry inside for at least three hours, rinse and dry.
Polish it with beer or vodka
These alcoholic beverages have enough content to make your silver jewelry regain its luster. Just dip a soft cloth into either beer or vodka and wipe the tarnish away.
Soak your trinkets in an ammonia solution
Combine half a cup of ammonia with a cup of lukewarm water in a large bowl. Allow your jewelry to soak into this solution for 10-15 minutes. Remove them after the prescribed time and wipe them dry. Don’t use this solution for trinkets with pearls to avoid damage.
Treat it with Alka-Seltzer
This medicine is not only good for an upset stomach. It contains soda bicarbonate which is used for baking powder and toothpastes. Just drop an Alka-Seltzer in a glass of water, let it fizzle and drop your jewelry into it.
